Pontrilas Court
Ownership and Land

Pontrilas Court was once part of a larger estate which included Pontrilas Farm, Mill and Forge together with other houses, farms and land amounting to more than 1,330 acres in five Herefordshire parishes. The Court, Farm and Mill are shown most clearly on the 1838 Kentchurch tithe map shown opposite (and described on page 21) while the forge was further up the road to the north-east.

Many early historical records refer merely to ‘Pontrilas’ and it is not always clear whether the subject is the village, the estate or Pontrilas Court. The present building at Pontrilas Court is believed to have been constructed between 1630 and 1640, but there may well have been an earlier house or farm on the estate when the Baskerville family came to Pontrilas in the 16th century.
